So we just celebrated the 4th of July, America's Independence Day. But there has been so much division in the country, we wonder sometimes what independence we are talking about. We are slaves. Slaves to our own opinions. Slaves to our phones. Slaves to people liking our every post on social media. Slaves to our political standings. Slaves to sin.
1 Peter 2:19 says, “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”
So what independence are we celebrating?
Don't get me wrong, we should be slaves. That's right, slaves. But slaves to what? Or better asked, slaves to who?
1 Corinthians 7:22 says, "For the one who was a slave when called to faith in the Lord is the Lord's freed person; similarly, the one who was free when called is Christ's slave."
The Bible says that we were slaves to everything the world had to offer. When we were called into God's family, to our holy calling, we were busy slaving away. The things of this world had a hold on us. Sin had us in chains. Then we were called to faith. Faith in the Lord God Almighty Jesus Christ! Faith that believes that He was crucified, died and was buried but on the third day arose again! Faith that He conquered hell and death to give us eternal life with Him! When we confess with our mouths the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we are saved! We are a freed person! Sin will no longer send us to hell!
But is says we are Christ's slave? See we were freed from hell and death and being a slave to the things of this world. But then we are called to be slaves again. We are called to be slaves but not to the world or a political party. Not to social media or what people think of us. We are called to be slaves of Christ. Why?
The next verse makes it clear. "You were bought at a price..." Christ paid for your penalty. You were a slave to sin but Jesus Christ bled to pay for your sin. He died so you wouldn't have to. He paid for you to be free. But now, you belong to Him. So what does he asked of us as His slaves?
To tell others what He has done for us and what He can do for them. You are obligated by the blood of Jesus to spread the good news that there is a Redeemer who can save them from their enslavement from sin! You cannot keep it to you yourself! Imagine sitting in prison for 10 years on death row. 10 years behind bars, never being able to see your family, no one visited you and wondering what life is like on the outside. One day you are called by the prison guard to get your things. It doesn't matter if you are guilty or innocent, you get up and grab your stuff.
"What's going on?"
"Your free to go."
"Someone confessed to your crime."
"But I did it!"
"It doesn't matter, he said he wanted you to have a second chance to live."
What would you do? You would tell the world the marvelous story of your freedom?
That's what Christ is asking you to do for Him because of what He has done for you! Tell the world what He has done for you and what He can do for them!
Happy Independence Day!
